How can we cool our garden room in summer?

Introduction

Many garden room companies write a lot of articles about how you can heat and keep warm your summerhouse- but what about keeping your garden room cool?

Because on those hot summer’s days, you might want to work in your garden office. And what you don’t want is to emerge completely drenched in sweat, very hot, and wishing that you had worn more deodorant!

So, what’s the solution how do you cool a garden room?

Air conditioning

In our opinion there’s air conditioning, and then there’s air conditioning- and what do we mean by that?

Well, some really cheap air conditioning units, are really not up to the job of cooling a garden room, and if the cheap air conditioning units do, they make take an eternity to bring the room temperature down to a level where its comfortable.

So, we would recommend hiring a garden room company, that install quality brands of air-conditioning, and sometimes our customers know the brand they want. For example, they may know that they want a Mitsubishi air conditioning unit, as these are very good quality or they may want a Hitachi air conditioning unit, both brands are very high quality. So if you do obtain a quote from a garden room company, and on the quote it just states “air conditioning unit” then we would recommend that you ask, which brand the company is going to use.

That’s because you want a powerful air conditioning unit, a top-quality air-conditioning unit, that once you press the remote to switch it on, within minutes you should be able to feel the room getting much cooler.

Have quality panel insulation fitted to the celling, the walls and the floor

When your garden room is being constructed, behind the plasterboard walls, and ceiling and beneath the floor, you should have a panel insulation fitted.

Panel insulation, is made with a centre that’s made from insulating foam, this comes in various thicknesses, the thicker the better, as the thicker the panel insulation, the better it will be at insulating the room. However, panel insulation can be very thick, and you do have to think how much of the internal room will be taken up by the panel insulation, and then the plasterboard added to the outside.

Yet panel insulation should be added to the roof, the side walls and floor, panel insulation is not just used to keep the garden room warm in winter, its also used to reflect heat and for the hot air to be reflected in the summer. Of course, if you have the windows and doors wide open in summer, then hot air will come in, yet if you hire our electricians to install air conditioning, then this means that the panel insulation can keep the cold air inside for longer, that’s if the windows and doors are closed.

Sheep’s wool insulation

Some customers will want their garden room built in an eco-friendly way as possible, so for example, some customers may ask us to buy reclaimed wood from a reclamation yard. This is great, because often the wood, such as 2×4 timbers will be cheaper than to buy new, and then some customers don’t want panel insulation, they want their insulation to be 100% natural, so they may want sheep’s wools insulation.

We can put sheep’s wool insulation in the side walls, to better insulate your garden office or room.

Would you like triple glazing fitted?

We can install triple glazing, this will not only make the garden room quieter inside, but also improve the energy efficiency of the room, because triple glazing is a very energy efficient type of windows.

We can even have bi-folding doors made, that are made using triple glazing.

Triple glazing is quite expensive, yet if you want your garden room to be as energy efficient as possible, then we would recommend having triple glazing installed.

We can fit blinds within the windows

We would highly recommend that you opt for bi-folding doors, and windows, which have blinds fitted in the windows, this helps you to adjust the light coming into the garden room.

Solar panels can help to keep electric costs down

We have mentioned in this article, about having air conditioning fitted to your garden room, yet, a lot of people may be put off by having air conditioning installed, due to the electric costs of having the air conditioning unit on. So, we would recommend having solar panels fitted to the roof of your garden room, so that you can generate electric, and this can help to offset some of the cost of having your air conditioning switched on. We would could also install a massive battery within a side room of your garden room, so the electric generated by the solar panels, can be stored in the massive battery, then you could use this electric when you want. With rising energy prices, we think having solar panels fitted to your garden room just makes sense.

Think about the exterior cladding

Think about which exterior cladding you want, for example, some metal sheet cladding, can actually come with a foam insulation as well, so this can help to better insulate your summerhouse. The great thing about having metal sheet cladding is that it is very low maintenance, as it’s not like wood, and wont need painting or varnishing.

Things to think about when designing your garden office

Introduction

Some people might be spending 30, 40 50 hours+ sat in their garden office, so its so important that the room is made as comfortable as possible. That you carefully design the whole building, so that its energy efficient, that’s its comfortable, and so its easy to maintain, so you are not wasting time, painting, staining, varnishing when you have other more important work to do.

So, because we have built so many garden office in Wales, hundreds of garden offices, we thought we would have chat with our builders and our garden room designers, and provide some top tips, to help you to design your garden office.

Make it low maintenance

Let’s say you have a lot of work to do, let’s say you are a solicitor and you work from home, so you hire us to build a garden office for you. You may not want to every year be varnishing, be painting be staining the garden office, because it can take up a lot of time, yet at the same time, you don’t want the garden office to start to look run down, and not maintained, you want the building to look as good as new. So, what we would recommend is to make the building low maintenance, and to do this we would recommend using composite everywhere you can, composite decking, composite cladding, composite facia board.

We would recommend composite, because its so easy to maintain, a simple wipe down with a rag is all it needs. It not made entirely from wood, so it never ever needs painting, and it can be made to look like real wood, but the benefit is with composite, it may have the appearance of wood, but it’s made from composite, so it never needs painting.

Air conditioning

If you’re going to be spending let’s, say 30 hours + in your garden office working during the summer, we would recommend having air conditioning added. Because on a really hot summers day, it can get very hot and stuffy in your garden office, and it might not be comfortable to work in the garden room.

It might get too hot, even if the bi-folding doors are folded back, the whole room might still be very hot, and therefore we would recommend a quality air conditioning unit is added, we used to recommend a good quality air conditioning unit, for example Mitsubishi make very good quality air conditioning systems, and our electricians can install the air-conditioning system for you. Alternatively, you could always put a freestanding air conditioning unit inside the garden office, this is the cheaper option.

Solar panels

Energy prices have gone through the roof, so to heat and to have lighting in your garden office, will often mean that the homeowner has higher energy bills. That’s because before the garden office was built, you may be worked from the kitchen table, so it was the only the house that needed heating. Yet because a garden office is detached from the house, it’s another building that will need heating, we can therefore install solar panels onto the roof, which can help you to generate electric.

We can install multiple solar panels onto the roof, this is a great way to generate electric, but also to help the environment.

If you have a large garden, why not have solar panels on the roof of your garden office, but also have a large concrete slab built by us, and then have even more solar panels in your garden, helping you to generate even more electric.

The garden office needs to be well insulated

Here Britain it is cold a lot of the year, and say in November or December when you’re working in your garden office, you still want it to be warm inside. And when you switch on the electric heaters, you will want the room to heat up say in a very short period of time, for this is to happen the garden room company that built the garden room needs to add insulation not just in the walls, but in the roof, and the floor. Then when an electric heater is switched on, if the room is properly insulated, then it should heat very quickly, offering a comfortable room for you to get your work done.

What’s great about a garden room that has a lot of insulation is that, it makes it a lot cheaper to heat the room. If the room is not insulated, heat will simply escape out of the roof and walls, so this means that to heat an uninsulated garden room, means the electric heaters have to be switched on practically all the time, to try and heat the room, however, with an insulated garden office, that has good quality insulation, good quality doors and windows, it much easier to heat the room, so the heating hasn’t got to be on as much.

Think about security

You might have said a Apple computer in your garden room, and other valuable items, so we would recommend getting bi-folding doors and windows with quality locks, but also blinds within the window panes, so you can shut the blinds, and then a burglar cannot see within the garden room so easily. We would recommend quality CCTV is fitted, and our electricians can install CCTV at an extra cost for you.

Think about having decking fitted

If you’re spending a lot of time with excel spreadsheets, sending emails, and having video calls on skype, well your going to need to take a break from work, and have a nice cup of coffee or cup of tea, and you might want decking, with patio table and chairs, we can build decking for you, we would recommend composite rather wood, simply because composite decking lasts much longer, and also composite decking can help you to save time, because wooden decking needs staining or painting, and composite doesn’t, it doesn’t need painting, so you can save time, by not having to paint the decking.

We can build a garden office, with decking built Infront of the building, so you have a place to take a break and enjoy a nice espresso in the sunshine.

Think about which doors you want

You may want bi-folding doors, so in the summer, you can fully open the bi-folding doors, and you can let the fresh air flood into your garden office while you work. If you want a cheaper option, then we can fit a upvc door, we would highly recommend if you opt for bi-folding doors, then to have blinds fitted within the window panes, so that you can adjust the blinds, because otherwise on a summer’s day when it’s very bright, the sun might be so bright, it is shining your eyes too much, and you might not be able to get your work done.

Yet if we install bi-folding doors, and windows that have blinds within the window panes, then you can adjust the blinds, to let as much light into the garden office as you like.

Sound proofing

You might live next to a busy road, and the noise from passing trucks, cars and vans might be distracting as you do work in your garden office. Our builders can add extra thick insulation into the walls, and our builders can also add sound proofing. Therefore, if you live next to a busy road, we would highly recommend adding sound proofing to the walls, it doesn’t cost that much extra, but it can make a huge difference, you often can still hear the road and noise generated outdoors, yet the noise will be a lot less when you have had sound proofing added to the walls.

Let the music play- why you should buy a music room from us

Introduction

Music is good for the soul, whether we use it to pump us up, so we get exercising more, or whether we use it to unwind, to enjoy a nice glass of wine, and listen to our favourite tracks.

Alternatively, you may like to make music, perhaps you’re an artist, or a DJ or someone that likes to play a musical instrument as often as you can.

Whether that be the drums, saxophone or the piano, its good to enjoy music, and we think that you can enjoy music even more, when you own a music room that’s built by us. So let us explain how why we are such a good choice, if you want a music room built, and how the buildings we build, are perfectly suited to being used as a music room.

Tripple glazing and sound insulation

When we are really enjoying one of our favourite tracks, often the first thing we do, is dial up the volume, often we want to listen to that track as loud as we can, and this may make us feel good, but the neighbours- well, they may not feel so good about it, they may not like AC/DC as much as you, they may get annoyed with your love of rock music.

So, what’s the solution?

The solution is to have quality sound proofing installed in the walls, ceiling and floor- will this totally stop any sound from escaping from your music room? No, is the answer, yet what sound proofing does is lessen the sound escaping, it lessens the amount of noise, and therefore disturbance to your neighbours.

We then would recommend triple glazing is installed, that the frames are made from wood, or UPVC to further help reduce the noise. Then we would recommend on top of sound proofing that extra thick, wall insulation is added, and we would recommend panel insulation is used, but the really thick pieces of panel insulation.

Then we would recommend that you think about getting a green roof added.

What’s a green roof?

A green roof is simply a roof where you can grow plants on the roof, and why would we recommend this for your music room?

Well that’s because the layer of soil, can act to insulate the room, in terms of helping the room to retain heat in winter, but also, what it will do is help to reduce the amount of noise escaping as well. The soil therefore acts like a form of sound proofing, but you also have the added benefit that you can grow flowers on the roof as well.

A lot of power sockets

If you’re playing the electric guitar, or have dj equipment, or simply your playing electric drums, your going to need a lot of power sockets, as you might have a lot of musical instruments that need to be plugged in.

So, our electricians can install an ample number of electric guitars.

Multi-purpose garden rooms

We could build a garden room, where one half could be used to play musical instruments, or to have dj equipment there, or a huge piano, then why not have a separate room, that could be used as a bar?

You could have in half of the garden room, sofas, a jukebox, a bar, so you could have place to invite friends over and enjoy a drink on the weekends.

We can build a garden room, which spans the entire width of your garden, depending on how large your garden is, we could build a large garden room, that has multiple rooms. So during the week you could use the room, to play your drums, on the weekend it could become a room that you use as a bar.

Have you built many gardens building?

We have built hundreds of garden buildings, our garden buildings are not made on a production line, in a factory. Instead, we come out to listen to how you want your garden room built, so for example if you want to use the room as a music room, then we can add sound insulation, thicker wall insulation, and we add more power sockets, to help you to power all of your musical instruments.
